As countries develop industry, rapid urbanisation and higher living standards drive up energy consumption, mostly derived from oil. Rapidly developing economies such as those in Brazil, Russia, India and China are now becoming large oil consumers. This fact underscores the need for more oil, which in turn generates the demand for further technological growth. In order to meet the increasing global demand for energy, new technologies must be developed constantly. |
In addition, although the renewable energy sector has grown significantly in recent years, it still only supplies roughly 8% of the world's energy needs. The net output of such alternative energies as biofuel, wind power and solar power is growing rapidly. However it still comprises barely 2% of global energy production.
